US Secretary of State John Kerry on 1 March arrived in Cairo to push for a way out of Egypt’s political impasse. During his two-day visit, Kerry held talks with President Mohamed Morsi, as well as political parties, business leaders and civil society groups.

Dr. Amr Darrag, Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) Foreign Relations Committee Chairman, has hailed Kerry’s visit to Cairo as an important one, describing his call to opposition parties to join forthcoming legislative elections as ‘democratic vision’. “This is an important visit that we believe is motivated by the US resolve to deal with the legitimate constitutional status quo in Egypt. The FJP believes that a balanced relationship with countries of the world, including the USA, is of paramount importance,” said Dr. Amr Darrag. “John Kerry’s call for opposition parties to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections is consistent with US belief in democratic process,” he added.
