“We have indeed revealed this (Message) in the Night of Power: and what will explain to thee what the Night of Power is? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. Therein come down the angels and the Spirit by Allah’s permission, on every errand: Peace! … This until the rise of Morn!”
(Al-Qur’ān – 97:1-5)
These ayahs highlight the significance of LailatulQadr. The ayah 2:185 says that the Qur’ān was sent down in the month of Ramadan. Again, the ayah 44:3 says, “We sent it down during a Blessed Night (LailatulMubarakah).” These two ayahs along with Surah Qadr make it explicit that the Qur’ān was revealed in a Blessed Night of Ramadan. Islamic scholars believe that either the whole Book was revealed from the Tablet Preserved (Throne) unto the Archangel Jibrael or the revelation upon the Last Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be to him) commenced in this Night.
There are about 40 different traditions, all tracing the exactness of the Night. However, a majority of scholars believe that the Night of Power is one of the odd numbered nights during the last 10 days of Ramadhan.
That the Night of Power is better than a thousand months means, as the Arabs would say, a very long period of the ‘timeless time’. It is because in this one Night alone a work of such great magnificence was done for the well-being and welfare of the entire humankind and the guidance was revealed for all time to come. The Night, every year, brings immeasurable blessings to mankind.
