Palestinian resistance movement Hamas on 29 March said that a leaked Egyptian military intelligence document proves that it does not meddle in Egypt’s affairs. “The leaked document proves that Hamas has nothing to do with internal Egyptian affairs,” Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said in a statement. “It even proves that Hamas protects Egypt’s national security by regulating the border,” he added.

On 28 March, the Qatar-based Al-Jazeera news channel showed an alleged leaked Egyptian military intelligence document, dating back to late May 2013. The document, signed by Gen. Mahmoud Hegazi, who has been named as Egypt’s army chief-of-staff, calls for intensifying contacts with Hamas with the aim of adjusting Egypt’s north-eastern border, according to Al-Jazeera. There was no comment from the Egyptian army on the alleged document.
