I, being a real Muslim youth, feel that instead of suggesting affirmative action Chetan Bhagat has only disappointed us (Letter from an Indian Muslim Youth, The Times of India, June 30). For us, democracy has been transformed into ‘majoratarianism’. Secularism has become a farce; social justice a distant dream. Discrimination and humiliation have become our lot. Executive is hostile; political parties are apathetic and wear multiple masks to suit the occasion. We feel insecure outside our ‘ghettos’.

But, on other hand, we have overcome the burden of partition. Today, we assert to see our face in the governance, in the corridors of power, and aspire for a distributive justice and proportionate share in the development. We urge expeditious implementation of the recommendation of the Justice Srikrishna’s Report, Sachar Report, Ranganath Mishra Report, Nimesh Report, etc.

As for our religious reformation, the change is relatively slow, for, the minority community, everywhere, always tends to be conservative. Is it not a good sign that among school goers only 4 per cent go to madrasas, whereas 96 per cent of us get modern education in secular schools?
