The Centre on December 31 announced another extension for the Liberhan Commission probing the Babri Masjid demolition. The extension, giving the panel time till February 28, is the 43rd extension. However, the commission has got the 6th extension in one year, 2007. Though, the government assured the Parliament that it would not give the commission more time to complete its work.
According to a report, the commission appointed by then Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao on December 16, 1992 was asked to identify persons and organisations that played a role in the demolition of Babri Masjid. The statement of the last important witness, Kalyan Singh, who was chief minister when the Masjid was demolished, was recorded in August last year. Other political leaders who were examined by the commission include former Deputy Prime Minister L.K Advani and former Union Minister Murli Manohar Joshi.
