M.A. Jameel Ahmed breathed his last on August 8. His demise brings to an end an eventful period of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind in Tamil Nadu.
Born in Vaniyambadi in a business family in 1928, Jameel Ahmed was educated in the town itself. Right from his boyhood he was endowed with an inquisitive and intelligent mind. In the early 1950 when he was in Chennai he came in contact with Jamaat-e-Islami. Soon he became a dedicated worker of the organisation. From then onwards he never looked back and devoted his energies to promote the message of Islam.
He was the founder secretary general of Islamic Foundation Trust, the pioneer research and publication house which has published about 200 books in Tamil, English and Arabic, most of them in Tamil. The foundation under his able guidance took up the translation of the Qur’an into Tamil based on the Urdu translation of world renowned Islamic scholar Syed Abul A’la Maududi. His tireless efforts and promotional activities played a significant role in making this the most authentic translation of the Qur’an in the Tamil language. It has run in several editions in different sizes.
He was an Urdu speaking Tamilian but his love for Islam prompted him to learn and master Tamil. In 1970 he embarked upon a well thought out plan to translate Islamic movement’s basic literature into Tamil. He took help from several Tamil scholars and within no time mastered the Tamil language. He is credited with translating about 70 books into Tamil. The forewords to these translated books are a living proof of his mastery of Tamil and erudition.
He served the Jamaat in various capacities.
Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari paid rich tributes to him and said that he was a person whose love and dedication for Islamic movement did not know any bounds. He devoted his whole life to the Jamaat and set an illustrious example of sacrifice for Islam for others. He belonged to a well-to-do family yet his life was an epitome of simplicity. He was a person who was well acquainted with modern world and its ever changing trends. At the same time he was always busy in drawing the attention of Islamic workers towards these positive and negative trends. He was a voracious reader and was first to read or know about books on various subjects. The credit of being the pioneer of introducing the Jamaat and its revolutionary message to Tamil speaking population belongs to none other than him. He played a very constructive role as a translator, writer and editor of Samarsam, the Islamic fortnightly which has rendered yeomen services to Islamic literature in Tamil Nadu.
He is also credited with nurturing Islam F.M. with his tireless efforts and making it the most authentic and dignified Islamic institution of Tamil Islamic world.
Former Ameer Dr M. Abdul Haq Ansari remembered Jamil Sahib’s services and said that he was a man whose one and only fascination was service to Islam. He presented the most inspiring example of dedication and service to Islam.
His old colleague, Ejaz Ahmed Aslam, former Ameer of JIH, T.N. said that if any one person can be credited with ceaseless and untiring services to Jamaat’s message in T.N. it is none other than Jameel Bhai.
He is survived by his wife, four sons and six daughters and mourned by countless Islamic workers who would remember him for long for his warmth, dedication and tireless efforts for spreading the message of Islam. May Allah accept his efforts for the cause of Islam and bless him with forgiveness and everlasting Grace in the hereafter.
