The Maharashtra Cabinet has recently proposed a policy to protect and support senior citizens from physical and mental harassment. Those who would not take care of their aged parents will be considered defaulters. “If the state receives any complaint from the parents, the children will be declared defaulters and their name will be publicised,” stated Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Prithvi Raj Chavan on 30 September. The policy also suggests making old age homes mandatory in new townships and building facilities for the elderly people in government schemes. The State will also ask private hospitals to provide concessions for senior citizens.
