Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has written to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Minority Issues, Professor Nicolas Levrat, seeking intervention over the alleged deliberate exclusion of senior Muslim IAS and IPS officers in West Bengal from official meetings and protocol duties during Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visits to the state in July and August 2026.
Moitra alleged that during Shah’s July 18 visit to Siliguri, Syed Waqar Raza, Commissioner of Police, Siliguri Police Commissionerate, was asked to leave a border security review meeting attended by around 18 SPs and DMs. She said Raza’s name and post were omitted from the official protocol and that his place was taken by Sukesh Jain, IG North Bengal. The Siliguri Police Commissionerate, she noted, is the only Commissionerate in West Bengal.
She further alleged that Jawed Shamim, Director General of the West Bengal Special Task Force was asked not to attend the same border security meeting, despite heads of other specialised police wings being present, with the STF represented by IG Gaurav Sharma instead.
During Shah’s July 19 Kolkata visit for a meeting on law and order and disaster preparedness, Moitra alleged that Khalil Ahmed, Additional Chief Secretary of the Fire and Emergency Services Departmentwas asked to leave after arriving, and Shamim was again excluded. She said a similar pattern repeated itself during Shah’s August 20 to 22 visits.
