Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal has stressed the need to construct utility tunnels to avoid digging and damaging asphalted roads for utilities companies in a cable sent to Minister of Municipal and Rural Affair Prince Mansour bin Miteb. The Makkah Provincial Council recommended the construction of utility tunnels in its meeting on Dec. 24 last, the prince said in his cable.

Utilities companies such as telecommunications, electricity, water supply and sewage network can use the tunnels without resorting to digging the roads. The cable also said the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs can seek help from municipalities that have expertise in the field to study the matter. Undersecretary at the Makkah Governorate Abdul Aziz Al-Khodairy said advanced countries use such tunnels. The system has also been successfully implemented in industrial cities of Jubail and Yanbu.
