Malaysian authorities have seized a shipping container at the Port of Tanjung Pelepas after intelligence suggested the cargo inside was headed for Israel in violation of national export rules, according to local media reports.
The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) carried out the seizure on August 7 after receiving intelligence that prompted officers to inspect the shipment. Initial checks pointed to a possible breach of customs regulations barring goods from being sent to Israel, whether directly or through intermediary routes.
“Based on preliminary checks, the shipment is suspected of not complying with Item No 15, Second Schedule, Customs (Prohibition on Export) Order 2023, which provides for the prohibition of direct or indirect export of goods to Israel,” AKPS said in a statement cited by BeritaHarian.
Officials said they would now examine the goods’ nature, technical specifications, intended use and classification to determine whether the shipment falls under ‘strategic goods’ as defined by Malaysia’s Strategic Trade Act. AKPS warned that any effort to route exports to Israel would be met with firm enforcement.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim commended the seizure, framing it as evidence of Malaysia’s refusal to let its territory be used to facilitate trade benefiting Israel. On X, he congratulated AKPS for acting quickly to intercept cargo suspected of constituting strategic trade goods bound for Israel.
