The Delhi government is preparing a new legislation that will make it mandatory for all newly weds to get their marriage registered. The Delhi Cabinet on August 1 discussed a draft of the proposed Delhi Marriage Registration Bill and decided to make some changes to it before sending it to the Home Ministry for approval. The Bill proposes that all marriages in the city and of Delhi residents will have to be registered with the Delhi government. Health Minister A K Walia said, “We are bringing the Bill as per the directions of the Supreme Court, which had asked state governments and the Centre to bring in a legislation to make registration of marriages compulsory.”
