Maulana Marghoob-ur-Rahman (1914-2010)

Maulana Marghoob-ur-Rahman, a well-known religious scholar and patron of Dar-ul-Uloom, Deoband, Saharanpur, died at his hometown in Bijnaur, UP, on December 8. He was 96.

Maulana Marghoob-ur-Rahman, a well-known religious scholar and patron of Dar-ul-Uloom, Deoband, Saharanpur, died at his hometown in Bijnaur, UP, on December 8. He was 96.

He was shifted a few months earlier to his hometown because of illness and weakness.

Maulana Marghoob-ur-Rahman had taken the responsibility of administration of Dar-ul-Uloom in 1982 after Qari Muhammad Tayeb and continued to discharge his duties as its Muhtamim for 30 years.

After his death, the Maulana’s body was brought to Deoband from Bijnaur for burial. The funeral prayer of the Maulana was offered in the campus of Dar-ul-Uloom where he was also buried. Several religious leaders of every sect of Muslims expressed their grief on the sad demise of the Maulana. They said that it is the great loss to the Muslim community in India and abroad. The Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari, who was then on organisational tour of Kerala, said Maulana Marghoob-ur-Raman was a great scholar and very pious person; he served the community and struggled for the promotion and propagation of Islam throughout his life. His death is the great loss to the community. Maulana Umari said, “I pray to Allah that He bless him with a seat in the heaven.” Maulana Umari further said that Maulana Marghoob-ur-Rahaman was always very much concerned about all Muslim originations and was very friendly with the members of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind.

The various Muslim organisations, educational institutions, and various Madrasas of different schools of thought organised condolence meetings in the length and breadth of the country to remember the services of Maulana Marghoob-ur-Rahman.

Vice Chancellor Jamia Millia Islamia Najeeb Jang, in a condolence meeting organised by the university, said that Maulana Marghoob-ur-Raman was a great Alim-e-Deen of India and very pious person. His death is the great tragedy to the community; it is difficult to fill the gap which has occurred after the death of the Maulana.

Mr. Jang praised Madrasa students for their potentiality and hardworking nature and said that hard work of these students can make a difference and they are able to come into the mainstream education. All these are because of such Alim-e-Deen who render their services to these great institutions.

Jamiat-e-Ulama of Delhi state organised a condolence meeting in the Mosque of Madarsa Aalia Arabia. Presiding over the meeting, Maulana Muslim Qasmi, State President of the Jamiat, said that Maulana Marghoob-ur-Rahman was a very knowledgeable person of India; he served the Dar-ul-Uloom, Deoband for the whole life and struggled for the development and promotion of this great institution of Muslims.

Maulana Asrar-ul-Haque Qasmi, chairman All India Educational and Milli Foundation also expressed his sorrow on the death of Maulana Marghoob-ur-Raman and said it is the great loss of the Muslim community. The Maulana played a very important role for the development of Dar-ul-Uloom, Deoband.

President All India Majlis-e-Mushawarat Syed Shahabuddin said the death of Maulana Marghoob-ur-Rahman has created vacuum in the Muslim community; it is a great loss for the whole community.

General Secretary Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadees Maulana Asghar Ali Imam Mehdi Salfi said in his condolence message that Maulana Marghoob-ur-Raman was a very tolerant, enduring, religious person; his most striking feature was that he was education friendly.

Maulana Abul Qasim Named New Muhtamim

Maulana Abul Qasim was named new Muhtamim (patron) of Dar-ul-Uloom, Deoband, for one month on the third day of the death of Maulana Marghoob-ur-Rahman. This decision was taken in the meeting of the Advisory Body of Dar-ul-Uloom held at the residence of Maulana Badruddin Ajmal in Deoband. Only six members of the Advisory Body participated in this meeting: Maulana Baderuddin Ajmal, Hafiz Siddique Muradabadi, Mufti Manzoor Kanpuri, Maulana Ghulam Dastanvi, Mufti Sayeed Palanpuri and Mufti Abul-Qasim Banarsi.
