The Muslim Council of Britain on January 4 welcomed the Prime Minister’s call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, but urges for a clear condemnation of Israel’s murderous assault on the people of Gaza, which has now entered a new phase. So far over 500 Palestinians have lost their lives at the hands of lethal Israeli munitions. British people from all walks of life have come together to speak out against this injustice and are looking to our leaders for effective action.

“The invasion of Israeli troops has drawn a clear condemnation from the French government. We welcome our Prime Minister’s call for an urgent ceasefire, but it is a tragedy that our own leaders in government have yet to issue a clear, firm censure of the Israeli action. We are at a loss why our elected representatives have apparently frustrated efforts to condemn what world leaders have described as ‘barbaric and criminal aggression’ emanating from the state of Israel,” said Dr Daud Abdullah, Deputy Secretary General of the MCB.

Along with other Britons, the MCB joined strong calls for its country to stand for justice at this critical juncture. “We urge our affiliates to advise British Muslims to come together with fellow citizens in a broad based, peaceful civil society campaign to call for justice. We all must send a strong message that politics does work and that political, rather than violent solutions, can make a difference.

“Together we seek three things: an immediate end to Israel’s military assault on Gaza, an immediate end to the blockade and siege on Gaza and an end to Israel’s violation of International Law.”

The MCB is a representative British Muslim umbrella body with over 500 affiliated national, regional and local organisations, mosques, charities and schools.
