The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav, on 23 November, renamed the ‘Manyavar Kanshiramji Government Medical College’ after the name of eminent freedom fighter Maulana Mahmood Hasan. From now on the Medical College will be known as ‘Sheikhul Hind Maulana Mahmood Hasan Medical College.’ Maulana is the founder of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind. He had been sent behind bars by the British occupants in Malta between 1916 and 1920. The president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, Maulana Arshad Madani, expressed his joy over the decision of the government and thanked it. In a joint press conference with Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav at Mulayam’s residence in Lucknow, the Maulana said, “It is necessary that the future generation remembers Maulana Mahmood Hasan and his role in the freedom struggle. For the purpose it is an excellent and praiseworthy step.” The medical college was conceived in 2007 by Mayawati with a cost reaching Rs 300 crore.
