Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalswamy has rightly demanded power for Election Commission to derecognise political parties. Since our Parliamentarians have neither sincerity nor time to pass bills concerning much-needed poll-reforms now pending for decades, Election Commission should be also empowered to implement poll-reform after giving six-month’ notice to chairpersons of two houses of Parliament. Such notified poll-reforms may be considered approved by the Parliament if no objection is received from the Parliament within six-month stipulated notice-period. However such a power may be given to the Election Commission after making it truly autonomous by providing to select Election Commissioners with consensus of Prime Minister and Opposition Leader in a manner Chief Vigilance Commissioner and Chief Information Commissioner are selected.
