The Vice Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University, Lt. Gen. (Retd.)ZameerUddin Shah, on 27 April, asked the students residing in hostel to use no motorcycles from the next academic session. Gen. Shah, in an open letter to the students, said the motorcycle has become a major menace as well as exacerbating class-conflict between the rich and the poor. The VC also wrote the parents asking them not to provide motorbikes for their wards. However, the restriction will not apply to female students. In the letter, the VC stated that if a student can afford motorcycle, he can also afford to live outside the University campus as a non-resident student and therefore he should vacate the hostel accommodation for his less wealthy brothers who cannot find a place in the Halls of residence.
