Movement for Peace and Justice (MPJ) Maharashtra staged a daylong hunger strike to protest against the Government’s failure in implementing the recommendations of Justice Rajinder Sachar Committee Report even after the passage of one full year since the submission of the report.
Members of MPJ along with a number of dignitaries and social activists belonging to different organisations and associations staged the strike at Divisional Commissioner office in Aurangabad on December 1. They said one year has passed since the Sachar Committee Report was handed over to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh but the Government of India has not taken any solid action to implement its recommendations.
Addressing the large gathering participating in the protest, Abdul Hameed Khan of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind said, “Since the submission of the report the Central and State governments have been only making statements and assuring the community to implement its recommendations but no solid step has been taken so far. The need is to take concrete action rather than making mere statements in this regard. Giving due respect to the feelings of the community, the government must implement the Sachar Committee recommendations forthwith.”
Speaking on the occasion, Col. Darwesh Nahri appealed to the Muslims and other minorities to form a joint pressure group along with the various political, social and community organisations at taluka and district levels to exert continuous pressure on the government to implement the Sachar Committee report. “Only then we can get our problems solved,” he said.
At the end of the hunger strike at 6 p.m., a delegation comprising important dignitaries of the city called on the Commissioner Sanjeevan Kuma and handed over a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to him demanding total implementation of Sachar Committee Report to ensure progress and prosperity of Muslims at every level, discussion on the report in Parliament and allocation of separate fund in the budget for it.

Members and workers of Muslim Representative Council, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Maulana Azad Vichar Manch, Bahujan Karanti Dal, etc. participated in the protest.
