Around 30 commandos of the Mumbai Police’s Special Protection Group (SPU), tasked with the protection of VIPs and VVIPs, were trained by Israeli commandos in the city earlier this month. The session is one of a slew of capacity-building and training measures undertaken by the Mumbai Police in order to increase the efficiency of its combat units post-26/11. A team comprising five Israeli commandos, currently stationed in Bangkok on overseas duty, came to India a fortnight ago for this exercise. They were contacted by some Israeli commandos stationed in India, with whom the SPU had initiated talks. The Israelis trained around 30 SPU personnel in armed combat techniques, and provided tips on how to respond to a terrorist attack in the least possible time.”It was a very informative exchange of ideas between the SPU and the Israeli commandos. We held the session at the SRPF grounds in Goregaon,” Additional Commissioner of Police (Protection) Madhukar Pandey was reported as saying.
