Differences have erupted among various Muslim religious scholars regarding the last rites of the slain terrorists in Mumbai. Some are of the view that the last rites of these alleged terrorists should be performed in accordance with the Islamic Shari’ah whereas some others opine that they should not be buried in Muslim graveyards. The Muslim Council of Mumbai issued a letter to the Jama Masjid Trust demanding that the bodies of the nine terrorist should not be buried in the Badakabrastan cemetery at Marine Lines. Sarfaraz Arzoo, general secretary of the council said, “The terrorists’ acts are un-Islamic. In name they are Muslims, but not in their actions. Thus, we do not want them to be buried in a Muslim burial ground.”

There is still a third but moderate opinion which says that the law of the land is supreme. According to Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firnagimahli, Imam of AishBagh Mosque, “These killed terrorists should be given proper funeral in accordance with the Shari’ah because every Muslim is entitled to such facilities.” Maulana Firangimahli also demanded a probe into the allegations that alleged terrorists were from Pakistan and if found true then they must be handed over to Pakistan. The Vice Rector of Darul Uloom Deoband Maulana Khalid Madrasi noted, “Supremacy of the law of the land should be maintained.”
