A number of Muslim organisations staged protest in front of the District Collector Office in Moradabad following the incident of burning floor mats inside a mosque and desecration of the Holy Qur’an by some unidentified anti-social elements. The incident occurred in Sabri Mosque at Jatwara town in Moradabad district in Western UP.
In a memorandum submitted to the District Collector, Mufti Mohd Imran Hanfi, President, Ulama Union of India and Salim Ahmed, District Convener of Babri Masjid Action Committee, expressed their strongest condemnation of the incident. The memorandum also accused the district authorities for their failure to arrest the culprits even after a week of the incident. It expressed concern that the incident could have disturbed the peaceful environment and communal harmony in the district.
Later the representatives of the organisations also called on SSP Prem Prakash, whom they alleged that he was reportedly saying that the incident was the handiwork of the Mosque Administration Committee. Prem Prakash denied the accusation.
