Muslims Must Lead with Justice, Education, and Nation-Building, Says Prof. Mohammad Saleem Engineer

In a lecture at Jamaat-e-Islami Hind headquarters, Prof. Mohammad Saleem Engineer presented a detailed vision of the role of Muslims in India’s development. Addressing academics, community leaders and youth, he said Muslims hold a moral and national responsibility to contribute to the country across economic, educational, social and ethical fields.

He described India as a pluralistic nation with deep cultural diversity. With a population of nearly 20 to 25 crore, he said Muslims form an important part of the national fabric. This population strength, he noted, brings responsibility. He said Muslims are inseparable from India and must define their relationship with clarity.

He rejected any idea of separation between Muslims and the rest of the country. He criticised divisive narratives and said political propaganda should not distract Muslims from their duty. He recalled the contributions of Muslim ancestors and said Muslims share cultural and civilizational ties with all Indians. Even those who hold prejudice, he said, should be treated with compassion.

Drawing from Qur’anic teachings, he said Muslims should view all Indians as their people. He said this moral approach directs Muslims to work for the welfare of the country. He then outlined practical duties. He urged Muslims to strengthen their economic role. He called for entrepreneurship, honest business practices and collaboration.
