In a remarkable achievement in Gujarat University, all the three medals instituted for Sanskrit and other ancient languages were won by Muslim students. Two of the medals for Sanskrit was bagged by Taiyeb Shaikh while the remaining other went to Yasmin Bano Kothari. The winners were awarded at the convocation on 5 March. Shaikh, who wants to pick teaching Sanskrit as his career, said he had decided to learn Sanskrit at the time when he was at primary school and his teacher used to narrate stories from Ramayana and Mahabharta. JR Machchi, Sanskrit teacher of Sheikh said, “Muslim boys and girls diversifying into other educational fields is a good sign. A language does not belong to any community. Anyone can learn any language provided he or she has interest in it.” Machchi also runs Zidni Ilma Trust to motivate Muslim students towards getting professional education.
