Muslim groups in Rajasthan have expressed surprise over the remarks of Israeli Ambassador to India Mark Sofer during his weekend visit to the State that Israel was “not in any type of conflict” with Islam. They said the remarks should be judged in the light of eviction of thousands of Palestinian Muslims, illegal construction of Jewish settlements and threats to the historic Al-Aqsa Mosque. Mr. Sofer, who visited the Ajmer dargah in September this year, went to Bassi town near Jaipur this on December 9 to launch a new Indo-Israeli centre of agricultural excellence. He said on the occasion that the Arab-Israeli dispute should not be seen as involving religions and the three great Abrahamic religions were the offshoots of the same faith. The Rajasthan Muslim Forum – an apex body of Muslim groups in the State – said on December 11 that while the Israeli envoy’s visit to the dargah was merely a “diplomatic gesture” addressed to the Indian Muslim community before the start of peace process in West Asia, his latest observations were “insincere” as they were not backed by the ground realities in his country.
