A recent report of the standing committee constituted by the National Commission for Minority Education reveals that the number of Muslims is surprisingly low especially in the field of higher education as compared to other communities. The committee found that the contribution of Muslims in building literacy rate of a state is almost negligible. The data available with the Ministry of Human Resources Development suggest that in states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Assam, West Bengal and Punjab the Muslim representation in literacy rate is in a deplorable condition. The literacy rate of Bihar is 61.8 per cent while the literacy rate of Muslims in the state is only 36 per cent while in Uttar Pradesh the same rate is around 37.28 against the combined rate of 67 per cent. In the national capital, Muslims only share 66.6 per cent of the combined rate of 81.7 per cent. While in West Bengal and Assam, the share of Muslims in literacy rate of the states is 59 and 48.4 per cent of the total 69 and 72 per cent respectively. Notably, 45 per cent of the total Muslim population of the country dwells in above mentioned states.
