Karnataka State Open University faces criticism after hosting a 3-day conclave linked to Deendayal Upadhyaya, ignoring clear State government instructions to cancel the event. The move has raised questions about administrative accountability and compliance within public institutions.
Vice Chancellor Sharanappa V. Halse allowed the event on campus and attended the proceedings. The State Higher Education Department had earlier issued a show cause notice to him for permitting a private programme in a State-run university. Officials view the decision as a serious breach.
Halse stated that the university only rented out the auditorium and had no involvement in the event. This claim has drawn scrutiny. Reports indicate that organisers used the university’s name and logo in promotional material, which suggests institutional association. Critics say this contradiction points to a lack of transparency.
The Vice Chancellor also welcomed key guests, including Governor Thawarchand Gehlot and Suttur Mutt seer ShivarathriDeshikendraSwamiji. His presence at the event has further weakened the claim of neutrality.
Academics and observers have raised concerns over the politicisation of academic spaces. They stress that State funded institutions must follow government policy and maintain neutrality. Many have called for stricter oversight and clear accountability measures.Pressure is now building on the State government to act against the VC.
