National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has introduced some changes in a few textbooks after receiving complaints from different social groups. In a written reply in Rajya Sabha on 10 February, minister of state for HRD, Shashi Tharoor, said CBSE had received representations from different social groups regarding some content in the history textbooks of Class IX and XI. In Class XI textbook, specific problems were raised about a sub-section – ‘Islam Ka Udai Aur Vistar’ – and in the textbook of Class IX, issues were raised regarding disgraceful remarks on the Nadar community.
Meanwhile, some blunders have been spotted in the textbook of Gujarat Board. The Date of Birth of Mahatma Gandhi in the textbook of Class VIII is incorrect and Dada Bhai Naeroji, Gopal Krishna Gokhle and Surendra Nath Banerjee have been introduced in the book as extremist members of Congress Party. Besides, there are several other blunders which not only mislead the students but also pollute their minds.
