A Member of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM), New Delhi has directed the Surat District Collector to take action in an incident wherein real estate brokers resolved not to sell or rent out shops to Muslims in the Rander area. On December 7, 2008 nearly 300 real estate agents and brokers had vowed at a public meeting not to offer their services to the Muslims of the area. Mehroo Dhunjisha, member of the NCM, had visited Surat when members of the Versatile Minority Forum, an NGO, represented to her against this ‘discriminatory’ resolution. She also wrote to Surat Collector Dilip Rawal, requesting him to act in this issue.
