Nearly four in 10 madrasas listed in Uttarakhand’s earlier records have closed down, while only 30 have secured recognition from the state Education Department, according to official data released amid a major overhaul of the regulatory framework governing minority educational institutions in the hill state.
Departmental records show that 179 of the 452 madrasas registered under the previous framework are no longer operating, a closure rate of 39.60%. Another 19 institutions have been sealed for alleged non-compliance with prescribed rules.
The Uttarakhand State Minority Education Authority was constituted on Feb. 3, 2026, replacing the earlier Uttarakhand Madrasa Board. The Education Department is processing applications separately, creating distinct recognition tracks during the transition period.
Of the original 452 madrasas, only 30 have obtained recognition from the Education Department, accounting for around 6.6% of the earlier total. Another 134 institutions have applied for recognition, while 54 are yet to submit their applications.
The newly created authority has also granted recognition to 35 minority educational institutions, including 33 madrasas and two other minority-run institutions. Officials clarified that these approvals are separate from the 30 recognitions issued through the Education Department.The government is also monitoring institutions operating outside the stipulated rules.
