The serious efforts of Islamic Ummah to rediscover its roots, set its house in order, reinvigorate itself, and present Islam as a viable alternative on the civilizational horizon, appear to have met with a roadblock.

The west, led by America, is again on its old game of destabilising Muslim countries. But there is a clear policy shift: instead of direct war it is promoting civil wars in Muslim countries. The US has understood the futility and high economic cost of direct intervention. Its misadventures in Iraq and Afghanistan have taught it a hard lesson. That is why it has decided not to directly interfere in Syria in spite of serious human rights violations and large scale bloodshed. There it wants prolonged civil war and destruction of military and economic infrastructure so that it may become a soft target for its lifelong ally, Israel.

The latest victim in the US hit list is Egypt while the option of direct intervention is still open in the case of Iran, which has been declared to be the Enemy No. 1 of America as it opposed American move to subjugate the entire Middle East.

One important aspect of US policy is providing permanent protection for its protégé Israel so that it may be used to dominate the Arab world. It is very unfortunate that some Arab rulers, who are prisoners of their self-interest, are merely acting like puppets in the hands of America. What else can explain their support to the military intervention and massacres in Egypt? It is more unfortunate that 23-nation Arab League and 58-nation OIC have not even cared to issue any statement on the dangerous situation in Egypt and other Muslim countries, not to say any meeting or discussion on this existential situation of Ummah. This paralysis of will has seriously damaged the future of Islamic world.

One more tactic adopted by the enemies of Ummah is stoking fire of internal conflicts by stressing Sunni-Shia and other differences. It is the basic duty of every well-wisher of Islam and humanity to desist from anything which may harm the collective interest of the Ummah.

The Muslims of the world, their educated and enlightened sections are seriously watching the disturbing situation and the day is not far away when they will assert and correct their rulers. Forget differences, close the ranks, join the hands, forego narrow self-interest, think about the Ummah and its universal interest. This is a very critical period in the history of Ummah. If we fail in this critical hour, we may lose our way and may never realise the goal of emerging as a divinely ordained Ummah.
