Najib Razak was elected on March 26 the ruling party’s new leader in Malaysia. Najib, incumbent deputy premier, was elected president of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), the main party in the ruling National Front coalition. This by default puts him as successor of incumbent prime Minister and outgoing UMNO leader Abdullah Badawi. Despite being the son and nephew of two former premiers and the longest-serving cabinet minister, he has a relatively low-profile among Malaysians.
Najib assumes power at a time of crisis for the trade-dependent economy, which is seen sinking into recession. Although he is trained as an economist at a British university, he has little experience of economic management. Najib’s name was recommended by the former premier Mahathir Mohamad, to be Abdullah’s deputy.
