Bangla new year day has been observed in Dhaka and elsewhere with much festivity. I did not see such festivity on this day in my childhood. Business interests and secular cultural groups have pioneered this large scale observance.
What is the significance of a new-year day? It is nothing but beginning of a new day and year. There is nothing holy or auspicious in the new day or year. That is the reason why Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be to him) did never give any importance to coming of new Arabic year in his life time. Same was the situation in Muslim lands in history.
If Muslims want to observe this day, they should scrupulously avoid Shirk, free mixing of men and women, indecency and dancing in public by girls.
