The National Commission for Scheduled Castes demanded to provide reservation for the Dalits who convert to Islam or Christianity. The Commission has sent its recommendations to the Ministry of Social Justice and Development. A senior member of the Commission, Mahendra Bodha said, “We have sent our recommendations to the Ministry of Social Justice and hoping the fruitful decision would be soon taken by the government.”
According to a report, the recommendations maintain that it should not affect the 15 per cent reservation policy of the government. The Commission also sought reservation for the Dalit Muslims and Dalit Hindus in view of their population. The issue was raised in 2007 when Justice Ranganath Misra Commission for Linguistics and Religious Minorities recommended bringing Dalit Muslims and Christians within the ambit of reservation. The Commission believes that its recommendations would help Dalit Muslims and Christian improve their socio-economical status.
