NIA CHARGESHEETS ASEEMANAND IN MECCA MASJID CASE

The National Investigation Agency on May 16 filed a chargesheet against Hindutva activist Swami Aseemanand for his alleged role in the conspiracy behind the 2007 Mecca Masjid blasts that left nine persons dead. Swami Aseemanand, whose real name is Nabakumar Sarkar, is also an accused in the Samjhauta Express bomb blast case. He was arrested from Haridwar on November 19, 2010, where he was found hiding under the fictitious name of Swami Omkaranand.

The agency in its supplementary chargesheet in the Mecca Masjid case filed before the Special NIA Court in Hyderabad has accused him of murder, attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy among other sections of the Indian Penal Code, Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and Explosive Substances Act, a statement from the home ministry said.

The Mecca Masjid blasts in which nine persons were killed and 58 injured in 2007 were initially probed by Hussaini Alam Police Station and later the CBI which filed chargesheet against accused Devender Gupta and Lokesh Sharma. Both Gupta and Shama are in judicial custody.
