Hitting out at Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, Congress spokesperson Renuka Chowdhary on 19 October said “nobody” felt safe in Gujarat. “Nobody feels safe in Gujarat … that is why tourists don’t go to Gujarat,” Chowdhary said. The comment came as Modi, in his Kanpur rally speech, slammed the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh and said people felt safe in Gujarat. Chowdhary, referring to the 2002 Gujarat riots, said, “Ask people of Godhra how safe they feel.” Asked about Modi’s popularity, she said: “Jab sheher me circus aata hai, taliya bajti hain” (when circus comes to the city, people clap).
