OCTOPUS FISHERY

The Arabian Sea and Gulf of Oman swarm with fish. Now, the Ministry of Fisheries under the Marine Science and Fisheries Centre is attempting to explore yet another edible marine species which can fetch good price in international market. The government has set in motion a project to explore octopus fishery by using pots to catch the octopus. According to Dr Lubna Hamoud Al Kharousi, director of marine science and fisheries centre at the Ministry of Fisheries Wealth, government of Oman, “Octopus has been identified as a new marine resource to be commercially exploited through an experimental fishery. Thus, the department has initiated a project which was set off in February to explore octopus fishery in Omani waters by using plastic pots and local earthen clay pots.”
