In a historic moment for France’s Pakistani community, a Pak-origin candidate has been elected mayor, alongside seven others winning seats as municipal councillors across the country. The results of the local elections, announced on Monday, reflect the growing political engagement of overseas Pakistanis in Europe.
Omar Yaqoob, elected as mayor in the city of Creil – often referred to as “Mini Pakistan” due to its large Pakistani population – made history as the first Pak-origin leader in the municipality. Alongside him, three Pakistani-origin councillors also secured seats, signalling a significant milestone for the community in French politics.
In total, 16 Pakistani candidates contested in various municipalities under different political party banners, highlighting the increasing participation of overseas Pakistanis in civic life. Among the newly elected councillors are Ahmed Khan Jilani in Verlierville, Naeem Muhammad Choudhry in Drancy, and Haroon Khan in Laconiou, who secured his third term. Additionally, Asad was elected as a councillor in Arnouville.
The victories are seen as a reflection of the dedication, hard work, and credibility of Pak-origin candidates. “This is not just a personal achievement, but a celebration of our community’s growing voice in France,” Omar Yaqoob told reporters after the results were announced.
The success of these candidates underscores the importance of diversity in European politics.
