The Supreme Court’s order to probe all the fake encounters which occurred from 2002 to 2006 is a welcome move.  With exclusive powers given to the Monitoring Authority headed by a Supreme Court judge, to constitute an independent team either with officers from the Gujarat Special Task Force or from outside, one would hope the investigation would be completed without delay and all the guilty will be punished.  Further, the suspended Gujarat police officer Sanjeev Bhatt’s claim in his letter to the SIT that instead of taking action to save the life of Ehsan Jafri and others in the Gulberg Society on the fateful day of Feb 28, 2002, the Chief Minister had instructed him to collect information that could be used to build a case that the Gulberg carnage was triggered by Mr. Jafri himself – shall be probed in all fairness.
