More than 100 international law experts from the United States have issued a strongly-worded statement condemning the ongoing US-Israel military campaign against Iran, warning that the strikes violate the United Nations Charter and may amount to war crimes under international humanitarian law.

The conflict began on Feb. 28, 2026, when the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes across Iran. The experts state that the use of force breaches the UN Charter, which permits military action only in self-defence or with UN Security Council approval. They assert that neither condition was met, noting that Iran had not launched an attack nor posed an imminent threat.

The statement highlights concerns over civilian harm. Reports cited by the experts indicate over 1,400 civilians, including more than 200 children, were killed in the first weeks. A strike on a primary school in Minab on Feb. 28 killed at least 175 little girls and teachers. A preliminary US Department of Defence review reportedly found the strike used outdated intelligence.

The experts also raised alarm over attacks on civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and water facilities. They stressed that international law restricts targeting objects essential for civilian survival.

The signatories urged the US and its allies to reaffirm commitment to international law and prevent further escalation.
