This refers to the editorial “Let’s Curb ‘Paid News’ Phenomenon” (Radiance 22-29 March). The paid news phenomenon, which was earlier localised and practised by individuals, has now become structured and almost institutionalised. The very unethical practice is not only detrimental to our fourth pillar of democracy but at the same time also undermines sacredness of this profession. As it is now election time, all efforts are being made by the Election Commission to be vigilant in order to contain the rampant growth of this illegal practice. In every election a lot of paid news cases are reported but despite all efforts it continues unabated and is growing by the day.
