Poona College Student Saves Lives

Sharif Ibrahim Kutty, a student of MCA at Poona College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Pune showed extraordinary courage and saved thousands of lives which the driver, Santosh Mane must have killed, informs Prof. Sayed Javeed Muzammil of Poona College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Pune.

The incident took place on one the busiest roads of Pune city when Santosh Maruti Mane, who on Jan 25 hijacked a Maharashtra State Transport (MST) bus and drove recklessly mowing down eight persons, injuring 32 and damaging many vehicles. The police ran after him for 45 minutes but in vein. Mane, 40, who is under suspension now, had driven away the bus from the Swargate depot. He ran amok on the city’s streets for more than 45 minutes till he was caught by Sharif, who while going to college saw the bus running fast and hitting pedestrians.  He rode his bike shouting to warn the people passing by while he was chasing the bus.  After some time, putting his life in danger, Sharif managed to get on the running bus and caught hold of the driver. He handed over the driver to the police. The principal, G M Nazeruddin, teachers and students felicitated him. Jamaat-e-Islami Hind Maharashtra is also scheduled to felicitate him during the Seerah programme on Feb 3.
