President Pratibha Patil will not attend the Gujarat Foundation Day celebrations on May 1, an event which has generated heat between the Congress and the BJP. Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi had invited the President to be the chief guest at the golden jubilee celebration. Patil, however, has regretted that she cannot be in Ahmedabad because of a prior commitment. “The President has sent a regret letter on March 8 to the Gujarat government regarding her busy schedule,” Rashtrapati Bhavan’s spokesperson Archana Datta told media persons. BJP and Congress have been locked in a strong war of words over the Modi regime. The fight resurfaced recently when Congress targeted Amitabh Bachchan for becoming the brand ambassador of Gujarat. In a strong verbal duel, AICC asked Bachchan to clarify if he supported Modi’s role in the 2002 riots or not.
