A private university in Meghalaya namely CMJ University has created a record of its own kind by issuing 434 PhD degrees during the academic year 2012-2013 even as the institution has only 10 faculty members with the degree of doctorate. The university has come under scanner of various agencies and the governor of Meghalaya has asked the university to withdraw all degrees awarded by it so far. The state police have also registered a case against the institution. As per the statement of Raj Bhavan of Assam, almost all the degrees issued by the university do not meet the minimum criterion of the University Grants Commission. The university claims that it was the first private university in the state and according to an advertisement its PhD forms are available even at a private dental clinic.
