The Muslim community in Punjab is all set to have its own Shariat Panchayats. The first such Panchayat would be inaugurated on 3 March in Malerkotla, a Muslim majority town in Sangrur district of Punjab. The Panchayat would sort out disputes regarding marriage, divorce and inheritance. “These Panchayats would provide a forum for ensuring fast and inexpensive settlements of the disputes in Muslim community,” said Mohd. Izhar Alam, chairman Punjab Wakf Board on 14 January. More such panchayats would be set up in other parts of the state depending on demand and feasibility and the litigants would be free to move to the civil courts if they were not satisfied with the decision of Panchayat, Alam added.
