Villagers of Lohawat Gram Panchayat under Kota district of Rajasthan, in a meeting on 16 June, decided to celebrate the birth of every girl child. In Rajasthani tradition, people celebrate the birth of a male child by beating drums and utensils. “From now on, the tradition (of beating drums and celebrating) would be followed after every girl child’s birth,” said RafiquePathan, the Sarpanch of the village. The villagers have also decided to plant a tree on the occasion.
Sex ratio in the district of Kota is 910 girls for every thousand boys while in the village of Lohawat which numbers 4500 in terms of total population has only 890 girls for each thousand of boys. The practice was earlier followed by Budhania village under Jhunjhunu district in the state.
