Policemen in India are infamous for their deeds. The worsening of their reputation can be judged from the fact that a policeman taking bribe is not considered news at all. A recent government report has revealed that Delhi Police has the maximum number of bribery cases from amongst all the state departments. As many as 15 out of a total 34 bribe cases filed against various state departments in 2007 are against men in khaki. The interesting part is that it is not the lawbreakers who fear them. Instead, responsible citizens, who abide by laws, fear the cops the most. Whenever ordinary citizens come across the men in khaki, they just have one thing in mind – they wish and pray that nothing goes wrong. At times, when citizens face a policeman, they suspect themselves if they had done something wrong. This depicts the degeneration of the police department in India. The issue is of a grave nature and it certainly needs introspection by the police department itself. This puts question marks on the integrity and the identity of the police department. The cops as well as the responsible citizens of India need to sit and think whether policemen need to re-discover their identity?
