Tamil Nadu Opposes Uniform Civil Code

M.K.Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, has told the Law Commission thatTamil Nadu is against the Uniform Civil Code.It is crucial to respect and preserve the distinct traditions, practices, personal laws of different communities, including tribal communities.

The UCC is not possible without the consensus of religious communities and any change in personal laws could not be donewithout their consent. Even among the people practising the same religion, the practices and beliefs vary from place to place and region to region. He said theUCC disregards diversity and undermines the essence of ournation’s pluralistic fabric. He alsosaid it violates the freedom granted by the Constitution underArticle 25, which provides every religious group the right to manage its own affairs.

Defections Bane of Indian Polity

The Maharashtra saga continues to unfold infinite options of permutations, combinations and possibilities for forming of unforming political parties and government. Defections are the bane of Indian polity. They are an act of betrayal of the people’s trust. The unedifying spectacle of trusted lieutenants and well fostered leaders shifting their loyalties because of the lure of power is a sad reality.

Neither morality nor law has reined in defections, as most legislators will readily join any political formation if they see personal gain. This is akin to business executives switching companies for better pay and perks.

Today’s politicians happily change parties for ‘better prospects’ and decorously ‘to serve the people’. It is amusing to note that the BJP is accepting the very culture that it often mocked and made the Congress Party what it is today. Even stable governments are not sure whether they will last their full term.

Anti-defection legislation has only partially fulfilled its purpose. Safeguards like reimbursing the cost of elections should be made a part of new legislation.

Opposition Unity Need of the Hour

In a major political development, the Congress Party has announced that it will not lend support to the Centre’s ordinance against the Delhi government.Speaking about the Opposition meeting scheduled to be held in Bengaluru on July 17, Congress leader Pawan Khera on July 16 said that his party will oppose the Centre’s ordinance against the Delhi government. He said that ever since Mr Modi became the Prime Minister, BJP has been attacking the federal structure of the nation.

Aam Aadmi Party has welcomed this development and announced that it will participate in the July 17 Opposition Parties meet in Bangaluru. Following a meeting of its Political Affairs Committee (PAC) of AAP in the national capital on July 16 to decide whether to participate in the second opposition meeting, AAP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadhaannounced that his party will attend the Opposition’s Bengaluru meeting the next day.

In the first Opposition parties meet held in Patna, 15 parties joined hands and now AAP will be the 16th party to make the Opposition unity strong and viable. All other parties are likely to join hands with the Opposition.

Nepalese Enjoy All Privileges in India

The Gorkhas are generally happy with India and Nepal. As far as I know India imposes minimal restrictions on anyone from Nepal seeking citizenship. Nepalese are seen in all cities in India, and they enjoy all privileges.
