Look Inward

This refers to a report, “Hindus converting for marriage are committing wrong,” says RSS chief. Recently, the Gujarat High Court has stayed the key provisions of Gujarat Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Act, and stated that if interfaith marriage is solemnised without force, allurement or fraudulent means then such marriages cannot be termed as marriage for the purpose of unlawful conversion.

The Supreme Court is also examining the constitutional validity of similar laws passed by Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh to halt the so-called “love-jihad”. The RSS ought to look inward as to why Dr. B R Ambedkar along with 3,65,000 of his  followers left Hinduism and embraced Buddhism. And even today, many Ambedkarites continue to do so.

Jamia Campus Turns Filmset

Various crews are shooting movies and web shows in the campus of Jamia Millia Islamia. Director Sahir Raza’s has been seen there preparing for his next project. The news of shooting movies on campus has left most students, who had been eagerly waiting return to physical classrooms, in a fit of rage.

A news report has quoted a student of AJK Mass Communication Research Centre at Jamia, saying “it’s shame how the university is allowing hundreds of people on campus to shoot but they can’t even open the library for the students who need it the most.” Is the university making money by allowing some OTT platform to shoot their show on campus? The students call this non-academic activity on campus ‘hypocritical’.

The students who have been attending online classes only, also feel strongly about allowing film crews to shoot at a time when students are being barred entry for regular classes due to Covid-19 restrictions. A student was reported as saying: “At least since October 8 the shooting has been in progress here. And I feel a sense of anger and disappointment at the university for allowing them while not opening the university for students who are having a difficult time attending online classes.”

Kerala Once Again Facing Flood Devastation

Kerala is once again facing heavy rains, leading to devastations in many districts. At least 21 people have been killed as heavy rain triggered landslides in Idukki and Kottayam districts.

Due to the heavy rains, the water levels continue to rise in the catchment areas of dams. The shutters of the Maniyar dam have been opened due to an increase in the water levels in the reservoir. Scores of people are reported missing. The bad weather condition is delaying the rescue operation by the defence personnel. On the state government’s request, the Army, Navy and Air Force have stepped in to help the civil administration handle the situation. The National Disaster Response Force has decided to deploy 11 teams. The weather office has pointed to creation of a low pressure area over southeast Arabian sea off the Kerala coast as the reason behind the downpour.
