Chandrayaan-3: triumph of human spirit

Mission to moon reminds us of Tamil poet Auvyar’s lines written at entrance of NASA “Katrathu Kai Mann Alavu, Kallathathu Ulagalavu” meaning what one knows is only a handful, whereas the unknown is the size of the world. Space science is like a gold mine where mining has just begun. The movement of dot on computer screen of scientists monitoring the mission is nothing but triumph of human spirit!

It’s bound to open a Pandora’s box

Even if the survey carried out by the ASI at the Gyanvapi mosque site is “non-invasive”, it will entail the presence of government officials and security staff in an area which, in essence, is a place for religious gathering. Furthermore, it is bound to open a Pandora’s box with demands of a similar nature coming from the majority community.

This amounts to exhumation of history because the perceived injustices done to the majority community date back centuries before India acquired nationhood.

Much water has flown down the Ganges since then. Modern day Indians ought to view the past events, inasmuch they cause hurt to the collective psyche of the majority community, as historical happenings rather than “wounds” to be redressed or avenged.

AI can’t substitute human intelligence!

AI-powered ChatGPT is said to have caused a revolution in our post-modern life. But the question is whether it is dependable and whether it can substitute human intelligence.

In a landmark judgement on August 26, Delhi High Court refused to rely on ChatGPT responses in a suit filed by French luxury company Christian Louboutin over its unique “red sole” shoes design. The Court said that artificial intelligence cannot substitute either human intelligence or humane element in the adjudicatory process.

It observed that the response of a “Large Language Model based chatbots” such as ChatGPT depends upon a host of factors including the nature and structure of query put by the user and thus, there are possibilities of incorrect responses, fictional case laws, imaginative data, etc. being generated. The court was deciding Christian Louboutin’s suit against a seller manufacturing shoes with similar designs in various malls in the national capital and other States.

Hate and prejudice galore

The viral video in which a UP teacher is seen encouraging Hindu students to beat a Muslim kid in Muzaffarnagar of Uttar Pradesh has shocked not only social media users but all the civilized citizens of our multi-cultural and multi-religious country. It has prompted outrage and unrest.

A lady teacher allegedly encouraged Hindu students to slap a Muslim student. Child rights body NCPCR, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor have reacted to it. “I have declared jitne bhi Mohammedan bachhe hai…” the teacher said on the camera apparently encouraging Hindu students to thrash a Muslim kid in the class.

The Muzaffarnagar Police said, “In the video, some objectionable comments were made. We spoke to the principal of the school and this fact came to light that the female teacher said that those Mohammedan students whose mother did not look after their studies, do not perform well.” The question is whose duty it is to teach kids – is it teachers’ duty or parents’ duty? If a student is not performing well, it is the responsibility of the teacher to take particular care of such a student.
