The Gujarat high court (HC) on December 14 expressed concern over the non-rehabilitation of children who are lodged in remand homes of the state, even after attaining age of majority. Chief Justice SJ Mukhopadhaya suggested that children under protection and care of the state government, should be trained in livelihood skills through vocational training. He said a child cannot be made to work till the age of 14, but after that he should be engaged in a vocation so that he starts earning. Then only he will be able to sustain himself, when he leaves the juvenile home at the age of 18. The court asked Anand Yagnik, the advocate for the petitioner, to address this issue of rehabilitation of kids after their life in remand home, “else they could prove more dangerous for the society”.
