A probe by the Madhya Pradesh Human Rights Commission into last year’s riots in Burhanpur has revealed that the unrest was instigated for polarising the electorate on communal lines with an eye on polls. The riots that took place in Burhanpur, a town of weavers in Khandwa district of the state, on October 10-11 last had left 10 persons dead and over 100 were injured. Trouble began after a provocative song was played during a religious procession, which resulted in arson, and imposition of curfew. The probe report has come as an embarrassment for the ruling BJP in the State.
